Stockyard Hill Wind Farm consists of 149 approved wind turbines located approximately 35 km west of Ballarat. Harnessing one of Victoria’s best wind resources, the wind farm powers approximately 425,000 homes annually. Brandstormer was engaged to visually document construction of the project.

Assembly and lift of Wind Turbine 64

The assembly and lifting of a turbine is a truly amazing process and one worth capturing. The turbines with a total height of 180 metres and blades measuring 69 metres meant aerial footage was key to capturing the enormous scale. Because time was also a factor - turbine lifts are slow and steady - we also incorporated timelapse footage to explain key moments.

To effectively tell the story of the lift, we focused on key areas like the mobile cranes that are brought in to construct the main lift crane, the lifting of the five tower sections, nacelle and the generator which alone weighs 89,000 kgs, and how the blades are assembled and lifted as one piece. With patience and luck with the weather we managed to deliver a compelling story that gives viewers a revealing insight into how these wonders reach the sky.

Transport of turbine blades

With wind turbine blades measuring 69 metres in length, overnight transportation is required to get them from the port to the wind farm. Again, aerial filming was chosen as the best method to capture the operation and the logistical challenges that the transport companies are faced with.

In our own small way we also faced a challenge. Aerial filming at night is hard at the best of times. When it’s 3am, your fingers on the  remote control are freezing and you have one shot at capturing a truck you can’t see carrying the blade which is moving at a decent speed, the level of difficulty is high. But it was a challenge we were up for.

The final video tells the story of the delivery of a blade in a simple and powerful way. Succinct copy combined with heroic imagery, a steady pace and a powerful soundtrack all combined to deliver an engaging and informative story of logistical expertise.

Preparing the ground

Preparing the ground for 149 turbines is a monumental task. Quarry sites, on-site concrete batching plants, access tracks, foundations and hard stands must be prepared using an army of earthmoving equipment on remote private land. The turbine foundations alone require 55 tonnes of steel and 560m3 of concrete.

Within this video we upped the pace and adopted a powerful soundtrack to complement the visuals and convey a sense of getting things done. Selective choice of footage and breaking the final edit down into themes with typographical and colour treatments helped to tell an engaging and powerful story of major accomplishment.

Results

Along with a series of videos documenting various stages of the wind farm construction, we also created long-term timelapse videos, captured aerial photography, developed the brand identity and project website, designed infographics, maps and communications. Community consultation is a critical component when building a wind farm. With this in mind we developed all marketing collateral with consistency of style to ensure effective communication at every step.
